FAQ
Volunteers are required in areas such as coaching (recreational, competitive and developmental), equipment, special events, clinics, camps, fundraising, sponsorships and more. If you would like information about volunteering with the NBBA, see Volunteer.
The NBBA runs in-house coaching clinics, reimburses coaches for the cost of NCCP clinics, and the club Technical Director offers one-on-one support. For on-line support, see Resources in the Coaches Corner, including information on
- the coaching role, teaching basketball, practice planning, basketball skills
- instructional programs, practice plans, drills

The NBBA offers the following basketball programs for boys and girls aged 6 – 18:
- Development Program for ages 6-11
- Recreational Program for ages 12-18
- Competitive Program for ages 9-18
Competitive teams work on skills and compete in games for placement within the region of Eastern Ontario as well as the province. High level of commitment is expected from parents and players selected for competitive teams. Recreational teams work on skill development and compete in local leagues that employ rules that focus on development and participation.
No. Basic skills, athleticism, an understanding of the game and desire are all you need to try out.

As of 2022-23, each year the club supplies a T-shirt to Development program players, and a reversible jersey to Recreational players. Competitive players provide their own uniform (new or re-used). No players are required to return uniforms to the club at the end of the season. Uniforms should be washed appropriately, i.e., do not wash white tops with dark clothing.
Players can purchase miscellaneous NBBA clothing throughout the year (see Club Gear).
According to the NBBA By-laws and constitution, each team will have a minimum of 12 players unless otherwise approved by the NBBA board.
Practices are held at various gyms in the Nepean area. Practices are held throughout the week with both competitive league games and recreational league games generally being held on the weekend.
Each player needs a pair of BASKETBALL shoes and an appropriate sized basketball (size 5 for U12 and younger; size 6 or size 7 for other age groups). Both basketball shoes and basketballs should only be used indoors and NEVER OUTSIDE.
Players can purchase Official NBBA basketballs at MegaCity Promotions, located at 810 Greenbank Road in Nepean. The cost for NBBA members is $100 + HST (to receive this discounted price, please ensure to state that you are registered with the Nepean Blue Devils Basketball Association).
Yes! In order to improve and bond as a team, ALL Players (competitive, recreational and developmental) need to attend regularly. In the case of illness, a player is excused, however, the coach should be informed prior to the practice or game. In the case of injury, the player is usually required to attend to keep up with new plays, etc. Depending on the level, those Players who have been absent from practices before games may be asked not to play in the next game. It is very difficult to play competitive basketball and another competitive sport. NBBA is considered the priority sports commitment for our players.
Skill sessions and sort-outs are held in late September/early October. Teams are formed by late October with practices being one or two times a week. For competitive teams, the season ends after the Provincial Playoffs or tournaments, which take place in late March or April, depending on the level. The Atom Developmental league and Bantam and Midget Recreational Leagues generally end the weekend before Easter. The number of tournaments each team plays is decided in consultation with parents.
Absolutely!!! The NBBA program is designed so that there is only one light practice during the high school season, and there are no tournaments during this time. Most of our players do both!
- Parents may be asked to sit on one of the committees established to maintain the organization of the club. These committees deal with publicity, gym space and the annual banquet.
- Parents are requested to see that their child attends on time and on a regular basis, all practices and all games (both home and away). Punctuality of getting to practices and being picked up is imperative; if players are late, at the front end, it holds up the session from starting on time and at the back end, it holds up the coaches/managers from getting home. It is not the coaches’ responsibility to drive players to and from games/practices.
- A few times a season, parents are requested to volunteer their time in running a canteen at games or tournaments. They may be asked to make a contribution to the canteen in the way of baked goods, drinks, hot dogs, etc. The money raised from the canteen goes directly back into the team account to help defray costs associated with running the team.
- Parents are also expected to score or time games their child is participating in from time to time.
- The NBBA hosts various tournaments throughout the year, and parents are expected to help that weekend.
Yes, the Ontario Basketball Association and the Eastern Ontario Basketball Association.
Financial assistance for registration fees (and possibly equipment) is available through Jumpstart and KidSport™. The NBBA also offers financial assistance but only after other community based financial assistance programs have been exhausted.
